I was reading an excerpt of a book by a nameless author who I’m less-than-enamored with and I came across this sentence:
…I was ninety-nine-percent sure that I was dreaming because…
Cliche alert. Variations of that line are practically everywhere from Billboard 100 songs to dollar-store paperbacks. But is it really true? Have you ever been in a situation and thought, “I must be dreaming”? Personally, I can only think of one when I was 6 years old. Ever since then I’ve been able to tell if I’m awake or sleeping–even in fantastic situations. So is this just a device for shoddy writers or a common reality?
hhhhmmm for some reason I have a feeling it was from Stephenie Meyer and you’re too ashamed to admit that you would read her work…. am I right?
Woah, why you be hatin’ on me? Maybe I came across it in a Ernest Hemingway book–did you ever think of that? Do you like how every one of my sentences is a question?
Don’t being embarresed to admit that you may have read something of Stephanie Meyer’s ! I have been in situation’s like that but I still don’t know if I was dreaming or not !
haha yeah maybe…but ya didn’t Levi. It’s okay I shall forgive your fault and over look it for I know that you are ashamed.
I’d like to know about the time you thought you were dreaming at 6. What a weird little kid you were; Cute, but weird.
I’ve been in dreams and thought I was dreaming, but have never been awake and wondered.
Mom, it was when I lost my first tooth, remember? I was so excited that I kept asking you “Could this be a dream?” I don’t remember why I was so overjoyed at losing a tooth that I doubted the reality of the occurrence. Thrills were apparently hard to come by at 6.
I’ve had dreams that felt like reality, but never reality that felt like dreams. (Though I almost couldn’t believe it when Anya was born 20 minutes after we got to the hospital. But I sure didn’t think I was DREAMING.)
I think it’s a cliched phrase used to express disbelief, and not an actual feeling of “Oh, I must be dreaming.” Of course, thinking how realistic some of my dreams are, perhaps others DO get a feeling of dream-like-ness in reality. However, I’m ninety-nine percent sure that it’s a cliche ninety-nine percent of the time.
levi, your tooth story sound so much like something Jack would do! He gets really excited about weird things too.
I have never been confused as to if reality was a dream, but I have had the feeling that I have dreamed the reality I am experiencing. You know, really bad dejavu. Anyways, I wonder how many combinations of dream-reality situation we can come uip with here?
